In August 2009 I approached an urban island of colour, people and vibrancy in the middle of a sea of large mediocre concrete buildings in Anyang. The scale of Seoksu market felt intimate and social. Even though many of the shops were not in use, street life filled the space. I started my residency as other artists were finishing, and there was an atmosphere of productivity and satisfaction. People had responded creatively to the spirit of Seoksu market through performance, installation and discussion. I had ten days to translate my own visual response. It was hot and sunny and a patchwork of canopies coloured the market space. The play of shadows, texture and pattern sandwiched the streets people walked along. Most canopies were plastic sheets hung by nylon string from drainpipes and old rusty frameworks. The different layers and patterns orientated one around the space. This made me want to contribute my own shadow pattern and play of colour to the market. I used green plastic which created a green shadow on the ground when the sun shone. I wove strips of plastic in a geometric pattern to create a central hole: a regular, quiet, empty, circular space in the patchwork of the market.
