SAP is the acronym of Seoksu Art Project. The English word “sap” is defined as ”a watery liquid in plants and trees,” ”strength,” or “to gradually weaken or destroy.” If pronounced [sahp] it is the Korean word that means “a tool which keeps misfortune out” or “a shovel.”
ARIA stands for “Artists Residency in Anyang” and can mean “a song for one of the leading singers accompanied by instruments in an opera or choral work” in English. Here, it also stands for “Activism, Revival, Interact, Art in life.”
A - SAP2009 ARIA pursues “activism art movement” where artists are able to more practically intervene in reality by combining the artists’ art space, actual living space (Seoksu Market) and the public.
R - Seoksu Market's vacant stores/spaces function as mediators to open up new horizons for the revival of Anyang, the “wetland of art,” by making approaches of avant-garde and flexible artistic sensitivity.
I - SAP2009 ARIA seeks to create interaction through the “glocal” activities of SAP artists from around the globe and the local community.
A - SAP2009 ARIA seeks to communicate with the local community by cooperating with local residents, schools and companies. Its ultimate goal is to achieve genuine “Art in Life” through the “Art Volunteer Program” which is run in connection with the Anyang Citizens' Volunteer Center (AVC) and the International Workcamp Organization (IWO).
